I become increasingly more impressed by Dylan’s acting every episode he’s in. When you’re making edits you end up with this viewpoint that goes beyond the casual watching. You start to notice the tiny details that might happen in milliseconds because you’re looking at things frame by frame. And Dylan’s face after Cam jumps is just… I don’t even know the word for it really. I’m in awe. There’s just so much pain and anxiety written all over his face. And then - for a split second - just before we transition to the next shot, he smiles. It’s a pure moment of relief. A heartbreaking smile. And you know that in that tiniest of moments Cam is completely at peace with his decision. The pain of his broken arm is so welcome to him. It’s what inspired my last edit.
Cam Saunders might be the most honest character portrayal on this show in quite some time. It’s credit due to both Dylan as an actor but also the writers’ willingness to commit to building a connection to a character and not to their issues or problems. Far too often on this show characters are quickly stuck with one dimensional labels. Labels we all know and have preconceived notions about. Yet Cam is different. Note that the writers haven’t used the word anxiety yet, they haven’t had someone explaining to Cam how dangerous self harm is. We’re not looking at a character with x,y,z problems. We’re looking at a boy with feelings. Real feelings. Really intense feelings. And that’s why it’s so easy to connect to Cam as a character. Personally, I really do connect with him. I feel for him. And I know most the people in this fandom do too. It’s hard not too because Cam has let us into his world, into his mind, into his heart- when someone does that it’s impossible to judge them. And that’s the best thing the writers could have ever done for Cam. For any of their characters.
Why didn’t I think to buy tissues? Cried twice tonight.
Fucking Degrassi messing with my emotions.
Rusty Cage Pt 1: Initial Thoughts
Despite feeling like set up Cam’s plot and KC’s plot were really emotionally satisfying to me. Yes they felt like set up but at the same time I enjoyed the pacing. We’re looking a two boys with these relationships in their lives that could be really, really good things or they could be terrible things: Cam’s relationship with hockey and KC’s relationship with his father. I guess why I liked the “set up” of the episode is that neither of these things is new to either boy but they’re new to us. We’re kinda playing catch up in regards to the role that hockey has played in Cam’s life and what his father has played in KC’s life. I’m sure without a doubt that they are both things these boys once loved deeply and now it’s a matter of has that love become toxic? Is KC’s need to give his dad a second chance going to screw up what’s good in his life? Is Cam’s talent going to take away any chance at being truly happy?
If I had to predict, I’m guessing by the end both boys will do what they need to in order to have the lives that they want. But that probably means two very different things for both of them.
Quick notes:
- They showcased my two favorite current friendships tonight: Niners group & Kianca. Please, writers more of both!
- Cam/Maya is really winning me over. I don’t think Maya understands the depths of the pressure Cam is facing but I also didn’t mind her reaction to it. I think she just wanted him to have some fun because look at the kid, he’s like an unwanted puppy sitting in a cardboard box by the side of the road. Also their duet was adorable!
- Nice work on the ice, Dylan!
- This episode featured fans as extras in the stands! Tomorrow I’ll be re-watching looking for familiar faces :)
- KC’s reaction to the wine! Great. It’s amazing to see where KC/Lisa started and how close they’ve become. Always great stuff
As for the C-Plot. um…. I dunno I’m a bit tired of Fiona and Drew right now. Both used to be such overwhelmingly complex characters and now? They’re a little on the dull side. Overexposure is probably to blame. Drew’s had a plot every week all summer long. And Fiona? I don’t think holding her back a year has done anything for her character except make her a shadow of who she used to be.
One shining star in all of this? Got a little set up for Imogen.
I don’t think Fimogen has the best chemistry on the show certainly not when compared to some of the other current couples. But I admit the tickle fight was cute. My advice to the writers? Lay off the Fiona plots. Let Imogen take the lead from now on and use Fiona to support her plots. It’s Imogen’s senior year too and we’ve barely seen anything from her perspective. Let’s try something fresh, please!
